Could India help kick start the UK economy?

4/05/2020

In September 2019, the UK Government announced a new immigration route (due to take effect in the Summer of 2021) which would give graduates the opportunity to find employment in the UK. Graduates would be permitted to live and work in the UK (for a maximum period of two years) at any skill level. To those of you who are familiar with the UK immigration system, you may recognise this visa route - it sounds a lot like the closed Tier 1 (Post-Study Work) visa. Just a coincidence perhaps?

Of course this announcement was made before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In light of this, it would certainly be worthwhile consider the proposal of the UK India Business Council.

Bringing the UK Graduate Immigration visa route forward at the same time as the end of the UK lockdown could provide our economy with the adrenaline shot it very much needs. If Boris Johnson truly wants to recruit the best and the brightest then he needs to start now - other global economies will be looking for graduates in tech, medicine and engineering and we do not want to be behind them in the queue for talent.

On Wednesday 15th April, the UKIBC wrote to the Home Secretary, Rt Hon Priti Patel, with two constructive and important recommendations to support UK universities and boost the UK-India “Living Bridge” during the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, we recommended that the Home Office extends all student visas (tier 4) for Indian (and other foreign) students who have graduated in the UK since January 2020, and for the Home Office to provide greater clarity to universities and students on the new Graduation Immigration Route – two important measures that would benefit the UK higher education sector and national economy.
